  President's Challenge - Quilt of Valor 

  We need to know how many members are participating in the QOV Challenge.  If you have made a quilt to be entered in our challenge, please REGISTER for this event.  Then, send a picture of your quilt to ITAdmin@desertthreads.org prior to September 30th. 

  The pictures will be loaded for judging online and the winner will be announced at our meeting on October 8th.  Registered entries will be numbered for judging, so do not include the label with your name in your picture. 

  Be sure to bring your quilt to the October meeting if you are in town!  You do not have to be at the meeting to win - you just have to have registered and sent in the picture.

  Oct. 10th. Stunning Stars using the Easy paper piecing with no tear method by Kelly Fillbrandt  - Oakwood Painting Room 10 to 3.  $30.00

  Learn to paper piece (or get reacquainted with it)! Using Carol Doak’s book “50 Fabulous Paper Pieced Stars” or “60 Fabulous Paper Pieced Stars,” we will make one full star in class (the Montana block) and start another (several to choose from; these will be slightly more complex than Montana). More experienced sewists might finish both in class. Once home, you can use these skills to make as many stars as you like, to combine for a table runner, wall hanging, or full quilt.
  

  

  Supplies:

  • Carol Doak’s book  - choose either “50 Fabulous Paper Pieced Stars”  (available from Thriftbooks.com: $7.95)  OR “60 Fabulous Paper Pieced Stars”   (available from Amazon: $17.95)

  • Spool of thread (when using multiple colors, a neutral thread like light gray or cream is good) with a prepared bobbin

  • Package of Foundation Piecing paper

  • A good scissors for cutting fabric

  • A good scissors for cutting paper (it can be the same one, if it doesn’t bother you!)

  • Small cutting mat (12x18)

  • Fabric glue pen

  • Repositionable glue stick (some examples are Scotch or 505 brand)

  • Seam ripper, tweezers

  • Add-A-Quarter Plus ruler – 12” needed [If you have an Add-A-Quarter Ruler (not “Plus”) that will work, but save the printed directions!]   (Available from Amazon $14.99)

  • Sharpie pen – any dark or bright color (not pastel)

  • Note paper or small post-it for marking stacks of fabric

  • Large gallon Ziploc bag

  • Large paper clips and either binder clips or small Ziploc bags

  • Optional but very helpful

  • • Felt ironing mat and travel iron – dry (no steam) 

    • 3M Micropore surgical tape (1/2” width)

  • Fabric: If you’re confident figuring out how much of each fabric you’ll need, go ahead and cut according to the instructions in the book. If you find it puzzling, don’t worry! We’ll go over the math for it all and I’ll even give you a cheat sheet so that you can follow it at home. You can wait and do the math in class. If you plan on making a few stars, just choose several coordinating fabrics, at least 1/3 yard each (more if you plan to make a full size quilt).

  NOTE: 
        The ruler and other tools can be shared during class.

  The Stripology Ruler, The Swiss Army Knife for Quilting 

   

  Have you ever wondered why so many quilters love their Stripology Rulers?  If so, this is the class for you.  Come join Debbie Kattelman to learn about the special features of all 4 Stripology Rulers.

   

  Debbie will be presenting cutting and trimming techniques for all 4 rulers and instructions for making GEasy Flying Geese blocks, Half Square Triangle Blocks (HST), Quarter Square Triangle Blocks (QST) and 4 Patch Blocks.   There will be time set aside for Hands on Practice.  

  Debbie will be presenting the techniques used to make the GEasy free pattern Lil’ Kim.  It is a table runner that is 14 ½” by 35 ½”.   The pattern was designed to use a Charm Pack.    You will have time to sew some of your blocks.   It will be a fun way to practice your new Stripology Skills.
